Free “Casting for Recovery Retreats” Available for Breast Cancer SurvivorsKomen for the CureKomen for the Cure

Two weekend retreats are being offered by Casting For Recovery (CFR), at no cost to women who live in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut of all ages and in all stages of breast cancer treatment and recovery.

During the two-day retreats, the sport of fly fishing is taught by trained volunteer fly fishing instructors, and a professional volunteer medical and psychosocial team provide support and offer counseling to provide participants a much-needed respite from the everyday thoughts of cancer. “While the gentle fly casting motion improves mobility after surgery or radiation and promotes soft tissue stretching, most importantly the women who attend the retreats are able to have fun as well as have a chance to share with one another in a safe and nurturing environment,” said Martha Pagen of Casting for Recovery.

Twenty-four breast cancer patients/survivors will be served during the 2008 Casting for Recovery Retreats, which will take place at the Straus Center in Claryville, New York on May 30-June 1 and on August 1-3. Over the past nine years, 174 breast cancer survivors have participated in our Claryville retreats.

The national Casting for Recovery retreat program began 1996, and by 2007 nearly 500 survivors attended 36 CFR retreats in 25 states, Canada and the United Kingdom/Ireland. By the end of 2008 close to 3,500 women will have participated in the Casting for Recovery program. The retreats are financed completely with outside donations from individuals, organizations, corporations and grants. There is NO COST to the participant.

The Twin Tiers Regional Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure is pleased to help spread the word through about this program for New York state breast cancer patients and survivors.

Try It On for the Cure® - Sunday, April 20.Komen for the Cure

For one day only, all you have to do is try on great clothes.

That’s the simple idea behind national women’s apparel retailer Coldwater Creek’s fundraising program, Try It On for the Cure®, which benefits the Twin Tiers Regional Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure and their vision of a world without breast cancer.

On Sunday, April 20, the following Coldwater Creek stores will donate $1 to the Twin Tiers Regional Affiliate of Komen for the Cure for every shopper who tries on Coldwater clothes in the store dressing room:

  • Coldwater Creek, located at The Shoppes at Pierce Hill, Vestal.
  • Coldwater Creek, located at Shops at Ithaca Mall, Ithaca.

No purchase is necessary. In addition, the company will also donate 10 percent of the entire day’s sales to Komen.

“It’s such a simple way to involve our customers up-close with a cause we are all passionate about! And it’s so easy, we do the giving – shoppers just have to try something on,” said Ann Johnson, Coldwater Creek.

“We hope our Twin Tiers Region will come out in force to support this great event and cause,” said Scott Heffner, Race Chair for the Komen Twin Tiers Race for the Cure 2008. “It’s great to know that our own Coldwater Creek stores are participating as partners in our promise to save lives and end breast cancer forever.”

Coldwater Creek is in its fourth year as a National Sponsor of the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure® Series and during that time has donated more than $4.6 million to Komen. As a leading retailer of casual fashion, the company offers its colorful, comfortable clothes in misses, petites, and women's sizing at over 300 stores across the country, through catalogs and online at coldwatercreek.com. Coldwater Creek charitable programs focus on raising funds that stay in the community. In 2007 Coldwater Creek donated over $316,000 to local affiliates. Whether it is participating in the local Race for the Cure or hosting benefit fashion events in their stores, like Try It On for the Cure on April 20th, the purpose is always to give back to the community.
